Full color printing services are probably one of the most expensive printing services in the past but with the development of new printing technologies full color printing has become an affordable printing service.

One form of advertising material that commonly utilized full color printing is a postcard. Postcards especially those that have undergone the full color printing process have a more aesthetic appeal than those plain postcards usually sent by excessively thrifty companies.

There are options involve when thinking of using postcards for any advertising endeavor like the option of creating the postcards yourself. However, the problem with creating your own postcard is the quality of the output since it may not meet your company’s set standard for quality. Using cable TV to advertise your business is a wise decision both economically and in regards to advertising potency, however, if any marketing strategy is to be successful it must be couple not only with a chosen medium, but with also well thought out content. There are two points to this. First, branding isn’t just for the multinationals. Second, the approach one takes to their advertising must be done correctly; this is a mistake that many small business owners make, as intimate details of advertising usually isn’t part of their repertoire.

In regard to the branding of your company, this can be done using both your cable advertising, but also in the signage you have at your store. The idea of advertising is that when it’s all said and done you want potential customers to think of you first when your product of service is needed. Be seen! Maximize the outdoor signage your local regulations will allow and be bold. Signs are expensive and you need to not cut corners. The people in that go by your store need to imprint your company in their minds. It’s incredibly cost effective in the long run.

The other aspect of branding your company is the way that you’ll use cable advertsing. Do not…I repeat, do not let the cabble company talk you into a “broad rotator” advertising schedule. You want to get the same slot, the same day at the same hour. Again, you are trying to imprint your company in the minds of peope and you do that by repetition..

The second prong of your strategy is simple. Do not have your content sell the accolades of your company or even your product or service. What moves people is when you tell them how they will be positively affected by the experience they have with your company. So, its about them, not you.

This will take you a long way from many of the other local businesses using cable advertising. So, follow your instincts, but do so while on the path that others have forged before you.

I really am a throw back. In this day and age of Washington Concensus minded, self-persevering valued folks, I’m just an old fashioned egalitarian. This doesn’t mean that I think we should all sew up some Mao-style unisex suits and eat from cans labeled in black in white. It just means that I don’t think that the playing field is level and it needs to be and then measures need to be enacted to maintain equal opportunity. Well it means some other things too, but that’s neither her nor there for this little chat. In the end, my support for equality comes down to equal opportunity and respect. And that’s how I try to approach people today.

I feel that everyone has something positive to share with me and the world and I try to approach all in this manner until proven otherwise. I have spent time with some wonderfully intelligent and caring wealthy people and I certainly have ample experiences of sharing time with those less fortunate that have taught me much about life with their wisdom, patience and sense of humor.

This is why I like balloons. I feel like their the egalitarian activist in the world of toys and advertising. So many other toys and advertising gimmicks typically associate themselves with one segment of society or another. This is not the case with balloons.

Although balloons boast an incredibly low and anachronistic price, both rich and poor kids want them at their party. Middle school kids still let off balloons to carry messages of goodwill to its unknown recipient. Even Colombian mules count on balloons as an integral part of their import/export businesses.

So, if you truly believe in equality, put your money where your mouth is and drop socially stratifying toys like PlayStation or Homies and get yourself some balloons. Let’s play and advertise in solidarity. Land, Liberty, Balloons!

Grab Customers' Attention With Advertising Balloons

Advertising balloons - also known as advertising blimps and advertising inflatables - are an incredibly cost-effective method of gaining the attention of passersby and turning prospects into customers.

Article Body:

Let's face it: most small- and medium-sized companies don't have huge advertising budgets. Traditional media, such as print, television, and radio advertising are far too expensive. And, for those businesses that rely on walk-in traffic, Internet advertising won't reach the intended audience. Thankfully, there's another advertising medium that's incredibly effective for a variety of businesses: advertising balloons.

Advertising balloons - also known as advertising blimps and advertising inflatables - are an incredibly cost-effective method of gaining the attention of passersby and turning prospects into customers. Starting at slightly over $100, the cost of an advertising balloon can be recouped in no time at all.

There are several different types of advertising inflatables. Advertising blimps have the traditional blimp shape, but come in a variety of sizes. They are easily customizable with a company logo, special message, or unique combinations of colors. Advertising blimps can be large enough to attract attention from miles away, or small enough to catch the eye of a trade show attendee. Larger advertising blimps can even be lit at night to garner notice 24 hours a day.

Round advertising balloons are also attention-grabbers. Again, they come in all sizes and can be flown high above the ground, acting as traffic magnets for a business' location.

A business can also buy a pre-made advertising inflatable, such as one in the shape of a hot air balloon that says, "Grand Opening." Eye-catching shapes and colors are sure to attract customers. Similarly, dancing balloons (also called wind dancers) are eye-catching. Inflated with a cold air blower, dancers will delight both adults and children. However, they're generally made with a light material that doesn't hold up well in sunlight or strong wind. For that reason, a tarp should always be placed under a wind dancer.

When you order custom balloons, you first need to think through the various elements that will give your advertising balloons maximum impact. Here are attributes to consider:

Lettering: If readability is important, stay with a small number of letters on one or two lines. Determine the distance at which you want your advertising balloon to be read. For maximum impact at 30 feet, for example, letters that are three inches high will suffice. On the other hand, letters that are 12 inches high have maximum impact at 120 feet but are still readable at 525 feet.

Colors: There are specific color combinations that will give your advertising balloon more impact. Black lettering or art against a backdrop of yellow, white, or orange is the most effective, followed by blue on white, white on green, green on white, red on white, and white on red.

Like everyone else, you probably look up when you see an advertising balloon in the sky. Just imagine how much recognition you can get from your business from the relatively small investment of an advertising balloon!

Classified Advertising in Local Markets

Even with the growth of online classifieds, newspaper classifieds are still the preferred method of advertising for many wishing to sell unwanted items. Most newspapers have a large local circulation and the chances of completing a sale through the newspaper greatly increase since the product can easily be obtained. Advertising in the newspaper classifieds and locating a buyer within your locality can very well be the key to a successful transaction.

Article Body:

Even with the growth of online classifieds and the increase in popularity in sites such as Craigslist, newspaper classifieds are still the preferred method of advertising for many wishing to sell unwanted items. This is evident in the number of print classified ads listed daily in newspapers and magazines throughout the country and worldwide. These advertisements may cost more than those which can be posted on the Internet, however, posting your classified advertisements in the newspaper will likely increase the chance of a sale as you are reaching a more local market. It is unlikely that someone from across the country or around the world will want to purchase your used furniture, lawn mower or Kenmore washer and thus much of the traffic that would come to your Internet ad would be useless. However, due to the fact that most newspapers that feature classified advertisements have a local circulation, the chances of completing a sale through the newspaper greatly increase since the product can easily be obtained. On the contrary, if you were to find a motorcycle for sale online and the seller lived in Florida while you resided in California, it would be very difficult to purchase the item. Furthermore, with the decreasing costs of advertising in the newspaper, many people find it a viable method of advertising the products they no longer need.

Another reason why classified advertisements are so popular in newspapers is because of the reach that many larger newspapers get. For example, a newspaper such as the Boston Globe, had hundreds of thousands of readers throughout the Boston area and throughout Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire and Vermont. Hence, if you are selling a product such as a car or other high-ticket item, many of these people may be interested in traveling a bit of a distance to make a purchase. By advertising in the classifieds section of larger newspapers, you are reaching an even greater number of potential customers within your local market.

Internet classified advertising does have some benefits such as it is very easy to post your ad and in certain circumstances your Internet classified advertisement may attract more visitors than your advertisement in the newspaper. Therefore, it is sensible to advertise your product on the Internet as well. By combining your newspaper and Internet advertising, you are sure to reach a large number of potential buyers in both the local and distant markets.

There are two types of classified advertisements which I would strongly recommend advertising primarily in newspapers. These types of advertisements would be promoting the sale of automobiles and low paying jobs. Many newspapers have a special section for these products/services and thus advertising these products in the newspapers is likely to reach more buyers in the local market. Advertising higher paying jobs and hard to find items, such as a classic car, can do well on the Internet since people may be willing to travel far from home for these types of jobs or to acquire a unique item. If you are selling smaller sized items, such as jewelry, clothing or books, they can be sold utilizing online portals such as Ebay, since these products are fairly easy to ship to their destination and finding a local buyer is not as imperative.

In conclusion, you need to determine the best method of advertising for your item. Newspaper classifieds should always be considered since this medium can very often bring you the customer you are looking for to complete the sale. Depending on the type of item you are selling, advertising in the newspaper classifieds and locating a buyer within your locality can very well be the key to a successful transaction.

Direct Mail Advertising: How I made $47,325 in 30 days by mailing 2,200 letters

How do you create a direct mail advertising campaign that gets results?

The following tips on creating a direct mail advertising campaign have been street-tested and will bring you huge returns in a short period of time.

In Fact, these tips enabled me to generate over $47,000 in mortgage commissions in less than 30 days! Keep reading and I will share 3 key elements to creating an effective direct mail advertising campaign:

Key Element #1: The prospect list - Mail to a targeted list of prospects

Here are a couple of ways to find targeted prospect mailing lists in your niche:

Look in your industry trade publications. I found great list providers for my direct mail advertising campaigns in the back of Mortgage Originator Magazine – A popular mortgage industry publication.

Or, search Google.com for: your industry + “mailing lists”. For example, I am a mortgage lender so my search would be: mortgage + “mailing lists” in Google.com.

By the way, when purchasing a prospect list for your direct mail advertising, be sure to get some kind of personal information about your prospect to use in your campaign.

Here is an example of personal information I use in my direct mail advertising campaigns:

• The prospect’s current mortgage company
• The prospect’s original loan amount

Key Element #2: The Envelope – How to get your letter opened

The envelope must entice your prospects into opening and reading the enclosed letter.

Here are some ideas for getting your envelope opened:

1. Insert a personalized “RE:” line above your prospect’s name in a window envelope.

I found that the original lender’s name works well in my campaigns:

RE: ABC Mortgage
John Doe
123 N Main St.
City, State Zip
---Bar Code---

2. Use this text with your return address in the upper left corner of the envelope:

Administrative Office
1234 South Broadway Pkwy.
City, State Zip

Confidential Information

Personal and Confidential

Key Element #3: The direct mail advertising mail piece – Get your desired result

The purpose of your direct mail advertising mail piece is to get your prospect to take a desired action. For me, that action is picking up the phone and calling me for a loan.

Here are some tips to help you get your desired result from your direct mail advertising mail piece:

1. Personalize the mail piece

If possible disclose small pieces of personal information about your prospect to get their attention and build rapport.

Here are some examples of personalized text I use in my direct mail advertising campaigns:

“Based on your original loan with ABC Mortgage in the amount of $250,000 your new payment would be $924.05.”

“Based on our calculations, this loan program may save you $32,841 in interest charges over the next 5 years and $197,046 over the life of your mortgage!”

2. Include a few “bio lines” under your signature. Tell them a little bit about who you are.

Here are the “bio lines” I use:

To your financial success,

My Signature
Hartley W. Pinn, Jr

Senior Mortgage Planner
10 Years Mortgage Experience
Licensed Financial Planner
Married with 3 children

3. Offer a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) in your mail piece

If you don’t currently have a unique selling proposition for your direct mail advertising campaign – Find one. What makes you different from your competitors? What makes you better? Why should a prospect use you over a competitor? Answer these questions and you will have your unique selling proposition.

Here are some sample USP lines that work well in my direct mail advertising campaigns:

“No House Payment Until April 2006!!! Imagine what you could do by skipping your February and March house payments.”

“Additionally, we specialize in loan programs with No Points. We can pay this customary closing cost because we are paid directly from the new lender.”

4. The call to action

Ask them to take your desired action:

“Call now and ask for me personally so we can discuss your individual needs and goals.”

“Be sure to visit www.YourWebsite.com to view this Free Video: “How to Get Paid For Refinancing”. Discover how to use your mortgage loan as a tool to secure your financial future. It’s the most informative site on the web!!”

Well, that’s it! I wish you all the best with your next direct mail advertising campaign. The only thing left for you to decide is how much money you would like to make over the next 30 days? Mail more letters and you will generate more sales!

Yes you can do it without being loathsome

Parties are times of celebration. They can also be a fun opportunity to network with people you don't often get to meet or be with.

This is the season for weddings, graduations, college reunions and family reunions. At these events, everyone knows why you are there. Take advantage of that connection.

They know you in connection to the bridal couple at a wedding reception, the new graduate at the graduation party, your class year at the college reunion, or who is your mother/father, son/daughter at the family reunion. But have you laid the foundation so well and so broad that they all know what you do, what business you are in, and who your market is?

Often we don't see these people enough to keep up. So celebrations are a great relaxing time to get the word out in a low key way and have fun at the same time. And if networking is not usually your cup of tea, this is a safe environment to practice.

Obviously, you don't want to be known as the MLM person cruising the room to recruit everyone within three feet. But, you do want them to know what you do and to become a great referral source for your business when they meet someone who is an ideal prospect for your business. They can't help you if they don't know what you do. Here are a few basic guidelines I suggest when you talk about work at social occasions.

- Don't ask for names - rather leave the door open for you to followup with a phone call.

- Don't sell - you don't want to become persona non-grata.

- Don't book sales appointments or bring out your datebook - followup with a phone call to do that during business hours.

- Don't hog the conversation - If you find yourself engrossed with one person more than 30 minutes, you need to close the conversation and move on. Your listener did not come to the party to hear a sales pitch by you.

- Don't corner anyone - As tempting as it might be to try to hook an ideal client, strategic partner or person of influence. Don't do it. You'll burn too many bridges.

- Do be specific about who your ideal prospect is, the person, title, company size, industry, niche, etc. - This makes it easy for your listener to relax knowing you are not targeting him.

- Do clarify what problem you solve - This will engage your listener in the benefits of your product/service.

- Do brag on one or two recent successes, opportunities, or achievements - At celebration events, everyone is in high spirits, so good news will be well received.

- Do move about the gathering and meet lots of people - if they don't know who you are, they won't be able to tell their friends about you.

When they remember you after the party, you want them to still like you and enjoy your company. To be memorable, it is important that you spend more time asking about them than talking about you. It's that easy to get free advertising among people you know at all the festivities this spring.

I just don’t get it. Advertisers spend millions of dollars for a 30 second or 1 minute spot in a football game yet in many cases they fail to follow through online.

I mean, if you are going to spend that much money to get your product visible wouldn’t you want to back that up somehow?

In this article I look at some of the shortcomings of a Super Bowl campaign and what I think advertisers should be doing about it.

So, Super Bowl 40 (sorry XL) has come and gone. Like so many other people I of course watched the game. Not so much for the game but for the commercials.

You see, Super Bowl Sunday is the time of year when many companies launch their year’s advertising program starting with an inaugural Super Bowl commercial.

And like every year, the usual suspects were there – Budweiser, GoDaddy, Pepsi and Coke to name just a few.

Now, there are some interesting things that took place with the commercials this year. For one thing, there were a lot of web properties hosting the ads online. Last year there were only a handful, but this year big names like Yahoo! and Google got into the ads.

Even the NFL website had the ads on its site appearing immediately following the game.

But what perplexes me is that none of these advertisers (except perhaps for GoDaddy) attempted to relate the offline advertising done during the game with anything they did online.

For example, if you were to take a look at any of the Pepsi, Coke or Budweiser websites before the game, you'd find no mention of the Superbowl. Pizza Hut did a little better job with the givaway of the boots Jessica Simpson wore during the commercial but that’s about it.

In today’s era of cross platform marketing I’m surprised that none of these sites really tried to build buzz leading up to the Super Bowl with their websites.

Further, there was little change to these sites during the game or even after. It’s as if the advertising during the game happens in a vacuum with no consideration for other media.

Granted they are spending millions for the right to have their ads show up during the game but in light of that I would think spending a few thousand to ensure the website helps further promote their message would be in order.

In fact it’s always bothered me when a company does TV advertising and the website doesn’t reflect the message found in the advertisement. There are only a few cases where I’ve found the website and the advertising work well together.

Geico, for example does a great job of tying their TV ads to their website. When you go to http://Geico.com one of the first things you see is the Gecko – their mascot.

So if Geico can do it, why don’t other companies?

I mean, if you look at the Coke or Pepsi websites you see they keep the branding intact but that’s about all they do. They don’t seem to reflect any current television promotion.

So while I was entertained by the commercials that weekend, I was also a little disappointed because that’s all they were – isolated bits of entertainment with little residual value because they didn’t tie in other forms of promotion. Namely their websites.

Really, when you look at how other TV ventures are embracing the web – with TV shows crossing over and working with web properties like AOL and Yahoo! you begin to wonder why advertisers don’t also integrate more fully.

I guess maybe it has to do with the whole marketing industry and the fact that they still don’t fully “get” the web. They know their clients need a website, but some of them don’t know why yet.

Many marketing execs fail to see the value of any type of online marketing even though it’s easier to measure the impact of an SEM campaign than any TV advertising campaign. With SEM, both Paid and SEO, you can track and measure visitors, impressions and conversions. With TV all you get is an estimate of total reach.

So to any Super Bowl advertisers who may read this please listen to this – to make your campaign really successful, why not try and integrate some of the marketing message into your website? You may be surprised at how successful it is.

Businesses often become known today through effective marketing. The marketing may be in the form of a regular news item or half column society news in the Sunday newspaper. The marketing may be in the form of a heart to heart talk with Mr. Brown on his prominent local television show. These are all advertising. Businesses cannot get away from the force of advertising. If they want to make their products known in the marketplace they have to use some form of advertisement. Advertising is being more and more known as a reasonable and desirable business force.

Let’s say you own a department store. The advertising manager of the store is like the managing editor of a daily newspaper with his group of reporters regularly bringing fresh matter to his desk and the different department heads acts as the reporters.

Take it on a Thursday or Friday, when the big Sunday advertisements are in process of construction, the scene is remarkably lively, and the man at the head of the advertising department has plenty occasions to exercise his ready cleverness and level-headedness. He must have very clear-cut and definite ideas as to what's what, and no matter what influence may be brought to bear upon him by the different managers the advertising manager must have a stamina to select what he considers the best and arrange the same as he thinks wise, while at the same time he must have sufficient tact and skill to do these things without hurting the feelings of buyers—who, after all, are the real powers in the department store.

The advertising manager soon knows the buyers. Of course, the manager has a pretty accurate knowledge of the products. He knows what the other stores are advertising. And he sees to it that the prices that go into print do not run higher than competing figures. Thus, every advertising manager should constantly study his market – which marketing material is best or which language is best – he should not shoot too high or too low. Likewise, his brain must constantly be devising new ideas and sales method to attract the public.

In choosing the right marketing material to use, the manager should consider their audience, their product and their budget. A good ad is very important but if its cost and design does not complement the product you might as well receive poor sales. For this reason, it is important to carefully consider how to design the material, what to include in it and how to print it. There are a lot of affordable printing techniques today. The method that you will choose will depend on the material that you will produce. Thus, carefully weigh your options.

Convention Advertising – Infinite Possibilities

Convention Advertising

You know what sucks? Really hoping to aspire to something and wanting to be that thing, yet making absolutely no headway in your attempts. Its broken dreams, its lost understanding of oneself, its exactly the kind of thing that pushes someone into being an “associate” for silly operations like Amway. Unfortunately that is exactly where I am in my life.

What I want to be, yet have thusfar mustered total failure, is a convention guy. I want to go to conventions. I have my first choices, but would settle for just about any kind. I feel as certain that either the Democratic National Converntion or the Republican version would off someone unprecedented opportunities to party. I had a big phase in my first year in college where I salivated at the thought of rocking a Kiss convention. But, the original convention that tempted my wildest dreams was a Star Trek Convention. I can’t even imagine how insane the after parties would be.

It is this personal historical fact that prevents me from completely trashing online business, advertising and networking conventions. Although, most of these guys are probably pretty depressing to be around for 52 weeks of the year, I just have a feeling they’d be ready for anything come convention week. Unlike a Start Trek convention where the people you’d be watching the sun come up with would probably inherently real cool people, where you’re laughing with them; the online advertisers could most certainly supply ample amounts of material to laugh at. Really, I have no preference if I’m laughing with someone or at them, so long as I’m laughing. Plus, when you have s group of people that are so tightly wound and are on their string form day to day, when you open the flood gates, I bet there’s a burst of pressure that could wipe a medium sized city right off the map…and that’s the kind of party I’m looking for.

Closing in on Effective Advertising

You’re spending a ton on advertising and you’re just not getting the results you expected.
Customers aren’t calling. Nobody knows who you are. Or worse yet, they’re confusing you with your competition. Is it the writing? The design? The positioning? Here’s an unusual approach to closing in on why your ads aren’t working.

Keywords:

copywriting, copywriters, writing, advertising copy, ads, brochures, mailers, web content

Article Body:

Get out all the ads you ran last year. Go ahead. Tear them out of your magazines or newspapers (if you’re lucky enough to have proof sheets, so much the better). Tear out your competitor’s ads too—as many as you can get your hands on. Next, fold the company names, addresses and logos out of view. If the company names are in the headlines block them off with paper and tape. Now tape them up to the wall, putting yours on top, your competitors’ below. Now back off, at least five feet. We’re going to gradually close in on the most effective ad in the group (hopefully one of yours).

The “Eye Test” View

First, and this is very important, don’t read any of them. Instead give them a quick, visual once over—what I call the “Eye Test.” Do your ads stand out? Or do they dissolve into the mush of sameness? Remember, your audience will see your ad, not in a vacuum but with dozens of competitive ads in the same or similar magazines or newspapers. If your ads stand out, you’re ahead by a length.

Step in, Feel the Image

Now move in a little closer to your ads. Close enough to get the feel or image they project Like a new salesperson who walks through the door, the first thing people react to is the overall image he or she projects. It’s the same with advertising. The colors, the design, the typeface should be consistent with the image of your company. A tennis shoe salesperson can wear a referee shirt and a whistle around his or her neck, a medical sales rep can’t. If your ads are in sync with the image of your company, you’re a step closer to your audience—and a sale.

Are You Projecting a Consistent Look?

Next comes an equally important aspect: consistency. All your ads should project the same image. No, they don’t have to have the same visual or the same headline. They should, however, look like they all come from the same company. After all, this image is your “familiar face” in the crowd. It’s also something you worked very hard to create. And it’s uniquely yours, no one else’s. Just like a good salesperson who finally got in the door to make that first sale. You wouldn’t dream of switching salespeople after that. If your ads look like they came from several different companies, your audience might assume your product does. If your ads pass this test, effective advertising is within your reach. Which is exactly where you need to be for the next step.

Arm’s Length for Positioning

An arm’s length away from your favorite campaign of ads. The object of this test is to see how well you’ve positioned yourself. Yes, you can now read your ads, but not for details. How you position yourself should be fairly evident by the time you finish the first paragraph. Positioning is basically how your audience perceives your product, service or company. For example, businessmen, engineers and students all need computers, yet each has a different idea of what computers can do for them. Advertise a computer to a businessman and you might do better to position it a management or accounting tool. Students might respond better to an ad showing computers as a writing and study aid. And engineers would be better persuaded to buy a computer if you positioned it as a design or research tool. In each case, the products are the same but the positioning generates the unique appeal for any given market. And the greater the appeal, the greater the sales. If you’ve done your research, your positioning should bring the reader a little closer to your ad and your product.

Move in to One Ad

We’re now going to concentrate on one ad. So pick your favorite one and move in close enough to read it in comfort. The headline and visual should answer the question “what’s in it for me.” If it doesn’t do that quickly and effectively, your audience may gloss over it without ever bothering to read it. Some of the best salesmen in the world start their pitch with a direct customer benefit—even before they introduce the product. They’ve learned that customers want to know right off what the product can do for them—the big benefit. If your product’s benefit is buried in the body and your main visual is an un-involving product shot or a photo of earth floating in space, your ad won’t go the distance. And the sale will go to your competitor.

The Revealing Close-up

Ok, time for the close-up: the body copy. It should “payoff’ or back up the claim you made in the headline by forcefully and effectively communicating your product’s key benefits. In essence, you still have to answer the Question “what’s in it for me,” but now you have more room to do it. You can be flowery, you can be humorous, you can even get technical. But you must convince the reader that there is a strong benefit to be gained in choosing your product over the rest. If you‘ve done a good job, your ad goes the distance. What’s left is what all good salesmen do before they leave.

Close in and Ask for the Order!

For this, you’ll have to get in close to the bottom of your ad. Close enough to read your call to action, which should be short and direct, leaving no doubt in the reader’s mind what to do after reading the ad—call, clip a coupon, circle a bingo card. It should also be clear as to what the reader can expect to receive—more information, arrange a demo, have a salesperson call, get a trial sample. The reader shouldn’t have to get too close to read this either (don’t put this or your phone number in fine print). Remember, when a salesperson asks for the order or gives his or her phone number, it’s always loud and confident, never a whisper.

There are obviously many market, demographic and personal factors we haven’t considered. But if you meet the key objectives we’ve introduced, your audience can’t help but close in on your ad—and your product. And that’s what effective advertising is all about.

Getting The Most From Your Advertising Dollars

Finding a balanced approach to your advertising dollars is critical for small business owners. This article identifies techniques to assist with that balance.

You now have that website up and running. You have a great product. You are all set to start taking orders and making those trips to the bank to make deposits! And then you wait, and wait, and wait some more! Unless someone can find your site, you will have a very long wait! That is where the value and benefit of advertising comes in. Advertising is what brings potential customers into your "virtual business door". As a business owner, every dollar you spend is a dollar right out of your pocket. This affects your profit margin and revenues. This can be especially difficult if it comes at a time when you're trying to grow your business. If you're going to succeed, you have to pay close attention to your bottom line and look for creative, innovative ways to cut costs while still getting what you need.

That old saying that it "takes money to make money" has never been truer than when it comes to promoting your business. And when it comes to spending money on advertising, how do you make sure that your advertising is working hard enough, without spending a fortune that consumes all your profits or even worse money that far exceeds your business revenues?

Thanks to the Internet, you've got lots of options for finding cost-effective advertising that does what it's supposed to -- bring targeted customers who are hungry for what you're selling, right to your door. But don't forget about cost-effective offline methods as well. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

Always make sure you focus your advertising dollars on your target market. The tighter your niche, the better your chances of finding the customers who are looking for exactly what you've got to sell! So rather than going wide, and trying to sell to everyone, narrow your focus, and then, if possible, narrow it some more! Figure out who your "ideal" customer is, and then create an advertising campaign for them. Once you know who you're selling to, look for media that targets that demographic. Depending on your product or service, think community and neighborhood newspapers, high school sponsor advertising, chamber of commerce directories, etc.

If your ideal customers aren't defined by a specific geographic location, look at regional or specific demographic publications. Perhaps a regional paper runs an annual issue that focuses on an issue or activity that reaches your target market. Use local cable television to broadcast your ads only in certain markets. You'll get cheaper rates and a more focused demographic.

Always ask for a discounted rate. (Many publications offer an "agency" discount of up to 15 percent. If you are acting as your own in-house advertising agency, you might qualify for the special rate. Sure, you might be turned down more often than not, but make it a habit to ask. It will be worth it every time it works for you.

Some monthly magazines offer discounts for multi-ads placed over a 3, 6 or 12 month time period. Most publications have a different rate schedule for different types of advertisers -- so depending on your product or service, you could qualify. And if not, sometimes just asking for the discount will give it to you.

Buy leftover space or airtime. This is advertising that the publication, radio or television station hasn't filled by their usual deadline. Of course you'll have to take the spots that are available, but again, depending on your business and the product or service you're selling, that inconvenience could still be worth the discount and the exposure you'll receive.

Use classified ads. They're not just for employment offers any more. You'll find classified ads in magazines and newspapers. Before writing your ad, go to your local library, and look through the back issues of the magazine or newspaper that you're considering. Look at the ads that catch your eye, or that are repeated month after month. Those ads wouldn't be in there each month, if they weren't making the advertiser money. Use those ads as springboards for ideas when you're ready to start writing your own classifieds.

Test your ads. Start out with the cheaper publications, so you can find out what's working and what's not. Play with them, and tweak them. Once you've got an ad that works, keep using it. You can run it more than once, or in more than one publication at a time. When it quits bringing in customers, or you start noticing a drop in effectiveness, then it's time to change it.

Do you own a retail business? If so, check into co-op advertising funds that may be offered by your vendors. Co-op programs provide joint advertising for your and your vendor, and you'll get a portion of the cost of the ad reimbursed because the ad mentions the vendor. (Note: most Co-op programs have strict guidelines, so check with your vendors and make sure you're following the rules).

Barter for goods and services. This can be especially effective with radio stations and local papers. See if you can provide your products or services in trade for the cost of advertising. (Also called "trade" or "In-kind" ads, the radio station or publication gives you the ad in exchange for products or services of equal value, and then uses those products or services as part of a promotion or contest for their listeners or readers). This can also be a great way to get additional free publicity, so if you decide to try this method, get creative and think outside the box!

Don't forget or be afraid to recycle the good ads in other advertising medium. If you've got an ad that's especially effective, looks great (or more importantly that is profitable), by all means reuse it in a circular, brochure, handout, flyer or direct mail piece. Use the graphics on your Webpages if available.

In summary, your goal should be to find a balanced mix of online and offline advertising. This will go a long way towards getting the greatest bang for your advertising buck! With a little creativity you will be maximizing your profits while minimizing your expenses.
