Okay so you want to go into the fabulous life of data entry, or you are already living such a life and you want a new job. However you are realizing finding a job is not as easy as it seems as no one seems to know where to look. Well as I have said numerous times before my friends, almost anything and everything you could ever want to find is on the internet. Like anything else it is actually exceedingly easy to find data entry jobs online.

Of curse you can start out with the simple search and do a little browsing. It doesn’t look like much, but once you get into the websites you will see there are actually a lot of sites posted by other data entry professionals that will point you in the right direction, especially if you want to work at home, these positively abound.

Of course there are the conventional job search engines as well; you know the ones, Monster.com and all of its counterparts. These will work just as well. You can find jobs virtually anywhere in the country or you can find ones that will let you work at home and you never have to get dressed.

Now the one thing you really have to be careful of when looking or a data entry job online is that you are working for a legitimate company. Unfortunately there are a lot of scams being run out there that require an initial investment in software or books and promise loads of cash. These are not companies that I would trust as I am pretty sure you should not have to pay to work for someone, I am pretty sure it is supposed to be the other way around

Home Based Office Jobs – Becoming One With Home

There’s no great explanation needed here. You know what an office job is; so you know what a home based office job is.

This morning my alarm woke me up from a great dream where I was hunting with Bill Clinton. His shiftiness even carried over to outdoor activities within my dreams, which would probably make him a pretty great gal to head for a weekend of hunting and debauchery. This was totally different from a dream I had with Jimmy Carter, but that’s for another day. Anyways, I got ready for work, put on my shoes and left. My shoes are very old. They’re Doc Martins and the sole is coming undone, so they flap when I walk. It makes me embarrassed and when I’m around others at work I don’t like to cross my legs because it emphasizes the shoes. We won’t talk about Docs moving their production facilities from England today (although, I’m sure there’s some quality connection issues that should be considered). The point is, I hate that. But, what can I do? Home based office job…nitz!

If I wised up, I’d do a little bit of research. And I mean “little” as in slightly more than just kind of thinking about it. Get myself a home based job mentor (I recently saw something about this honest guy named Todd, that’s up for giving just the right opportunity) and get cracking on not really ever having to get cracking again.

There’s no great explanation needed here. You know what an office job is; so you know what a home based office job is. The thing to remember is that for all the variety in job sectors and positions in an office there is a comparable diversity in the home based jobs too. That’s probably where the research comes in—finding something that’s just right for me. Then I’m calling the shots. Including job uniform, which for me might be tube sock (Red Hot Chili Pepper-style) and my lame, lame shoes.

Going Paperless - Your Route To The Efficient Office

Article Body:

Paper archives have a number of serious shortcomings, which at best cost time and money, and at worst threaten the viability of an organization.

There is first of all the issue of space which is typically at a premium in most organizations. Filing archives take up an ever increasing, and non-productive, share of the workspace. Archives generally deteriorate in poor storage conditions, and become disorganized and untidy – out of sight, out of mind usually applies.

Another important issue is the time wasted in operating and retrieving from a paper-based archive, which is very often hidden in general office activity but nevertheless can represent a real cost to the organization. Locating a document or file, even in a modest filing system, can take a long time, particularly if misfiled by the previous user.

Finally there is the very real concern of security. It is theoretically possible to plan for disaster recovery in a paper-based archive, either by using fireproof cabinets, or by storing photocopies of all important documentation in some remote location. The cost implications of either of these options are obviously enormous. Fires frequently cause the destruction of key files, resulting in crippling consequential losses for the organizations concerned.

Storing documents as electronic files overcomes all the shortcomings of paper archive in one hit. Filing space is more or less eliminated, document retrieval time is as long as it takes to key in a document or file reference on a PC keyboard, and files can be backed up either as part of existing IT procedures or on portable media such as the CD-ROM, stored in fireproof cabinets or in some remote location at very little additional expense.

Starting your electronic document storage project need not be as complicated as you would think.

Any piece of hard copy can be converted to an electronic file of one type or another, enabling it to be stored in and viewed by a PC or PC-based network, either individually, or as part of a larger electronic archive.

Each document is then assigned a look-up key, for example Invoice Number and Supplier Code or Name, plus any other key which could usefully identify the document in question. At its least sophisticated, this would require a keyboard operation - a potentially costly element in the process if a large amount of data is to be entered against each invoice. However, there are a number of ways in which data entry costs can be reduced, including a bar code scan from the document or the import of data through a text file.

So far, we have assumed that the database files would reside on a server, making the archive available across a PC-based network. A number of systems are fully portable, and can use CD's (or DVD-ROMs) as an alternative to a server. CD's can also provide low cost back up to a server-based archival system, for disaster recovery considerations.

Some organizations prefer a web server to hold their data and this offers the advantages of extendible storage facilities and fixed pre-agreed costs with the web hosting firm.

Choosing an Office Chair

Just like choosing an automobile that has adjustable seats so you can see over the steering wheel and drive safely, it important to "test drive" a new office chair before purchase so you can find one that adjusts properly for your body weight and dimensions. After all, you’re going to spend a lot of time sitting in that chair!

Keywords:

Article Body:

Does your workday consist of sitting for many hours in a chair — keyboarding, talking on the phone, surfing the Web, and meeting with clients and co-workers? And do your back, neck, shoulders and rear end pay the price?

Just like choosing an automobile that has adjustable seats so you can see over the steering wheel and drive safely, it important to "test drive" a new office chair before purchase so you can find one that adjusts properly for your body weight and dimensions. After all, you’re going to spend a lot of time sitting in that chair!

Research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Division of Safety, the University of California at Berkeley's Health Service Department, and the Cornell University Human Factors and Ergonomics Research Group has indicated there are certain factors that contribute to maximum comfort and safety in office chairs.

Height: Since it’s important to sit comfortably with both feet flat on the floor, a chair with gas-lift height controls allows you to adjust for varying shin heights.

Seat: A chair seat has to be comfortable for a long period of time. Make sure the seat has enough resilient foam padding to reduce stress on hips and thighs. It should be wide enough to provide at least an inch of space on either side of your body. "Waterfall"-type seat contours can alleviate pressure on the back of the thighs. If your chair has seat depth controls, you can adjust the front edge of the chair so it’s 2-3 inches from the back of your knees. If the back of your legs touch the edge of the seat, you’ll be unable to lean against the chair’s back support.

Backrest: Look for a chair with an adjustable back support that raises or lowers to a height that supports the curve of your back, especially the lumbar curve of the low back. Adequate lumbar support is a must to avoid stress on your spine. A chair’s backrest should also be slightly curved to follow the natural contours of your spine. You should be able to adjust the tilt of the seat up and down independent of the back support. Reclining rests the back muscles, while a forward tilt encourages good back posture and takes the stress off the muscles and discs of the spine. Controlling the tilt tension also allows you to adjust for varying body weights and lets the chair rock or tilt with the correct amount of resistance.

Armrests: Well-cushioned arms that adjust in height and width can help you maintain straight wrist posture for computer work, avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome and reducing sore muscles in the neck, shoulders and back. Armrests that are too high will not allow you to relax your shoulders, while armrests that are too long can prevent you from getting close enough to your desk and may cause back discomfort. Armrests spaced too wide apart will make your elbows stick out from your body in an uncomfortable way.

Health and Safety: Always look for durable construction that has been tested and certified. The best chairs have caster wheels that let the chair move easily on the floor, and a five-point base that provides stability and minimizes the chance of tipping the chair over. Adjustment controls should be easy to operate from a seated position and not require forceful hand movements. Office chairs come in vinyl, leather, and cloth. Cloth upholstery isn't as easy to clean as vinyl, and cloth-covered foam may harbor dust mites. However, vinyl or leather coverings don't breathe as easily as cloth, which may cause discomfort after prolonged sitting.

And finally, remember to get off your butt once an hour for a good stretch. Your body will thank you!

Home Decor: Don't Forget Your Home Office!

If you're ready to give your home office a makeover, or if you're in the process of converting one of your rooms into a home office, here are some valuable tips....

Keywords:

Article Body:

With an increasing number of people telecommuting and running home businesses, the home office has become ubiquitous. But when it comes to home improvement and home decor, people often overlook their home offices - even if they spend eight hours a day there.

If you're ready to give your home office a makeover, or if you're in the process of converting one of your rooms into a home office, here are some elements to take into consideration when designing your home improvement plan.

Your Desk

Your desk may be your workstation, but that doesn't mean you have to forego style. Forget the industrial look of a metal desk, and instead opt for furniture that is an extension of your home decor. You might love the richness of beautiful cherry wood, or you may like the minimalism and futuristic style of glass.

If your home office is in a room that does double duty - for example, as a guest bedroom - you may want an all-in-one set that more closely resembles an armoire. On the other hand, if your home office is your primary place of business, you may need something larger, such as a corner desk with a center computer station and work surfaces to either side.

Your Chair

Embrace both comfort and style when selecting a chair for your home office. If the room is fairly large and you select a cherry or walnut desk, for example, a leather executive chair might be a nice touch. If you don't have a lot of room, you may want to try an ergonomic kneeling chair. A wooden chair with back slats and a leather seat builds a bridge between functionality and interior home decor, or you can opt for the latest trend in office chairs - a chair with a frameless back that shapes itself to your body.

Storage

The amount and type of storage space you will need depends upon how you utilize your home office. If you primarily use the space for Web browsing and paying bills, you won't need advanced storage solutions. However, if your home office is your primary place of business, you may need the equivalent of drawers, cabinets, and bookshelves. Again, keep in mind that this room doesn't need to replicate a place of business; the goal is to integrate the space with the rest of your interior home decor. For example, if you need a file cabinet but don't have to access it everyday, you can drape a piece of fabric over it, much as you would an end table. Or, you can opt to buy a cart that features wicker file bins, which provides all the functionality you need without sacrificing style.

Personal Touches

Be sure to incorporate personal touches into your home office. A beautiful shade of paint, framed family photos, a small indoor fountain, and creative lighting can make it a pleasure to work from home. When designing your home improvement plan, be sure to create a home office that features colors, fabrics, and objects that make your heart soar.

Is your workspace working for you? Research shows that your environment makes an impact on your mood. So it may be time to give your space at the office a makeover to liven up things at work.

"Now you can change your office decor as often as you change the ink in your printer," says Anna Griffin, designer of the Anna Griffin Inc. line of desk accessories. "A change of color and pattern in your workspace can help to motivate, destress and even improve your disposition."

The key is to add variety to your area so that you don't get bored with the same surroundings and decor day after day. Griffin offers the following tips to help you create a pleasing and invigorating work area.

* Clear the clutter. The first step in producing a pleasant cubicle space is to make it clean and organized. This will help you stay focused on your work.

* Accessorize. Disposable desk accessories in fun colors and patterns will add instant pizzazz to your workspace and can be replaced whenever you need a change of ambience.

The "Rose" and "Elsie" collections from Anna Griffin Inc. are fresh, fun and, best of all, affordable. They feature four different patterns in eight coordinating office items, including file sets, magazine and pencil holders, paper, letter bins, journals and photo albums. The Rose Collection is full of rich, vibrant color in Old World floral patterns, while the Elsie Collection is sophisticated and playful, incorporating retro, pastel abstract and floral designs.

* Decorate your workspace to look like home. Because you spend so much time at work, choose a color or style and start decorating. A small area rug can add color and texture to your space, and a favorite lamp or lamp shade can cast just the right light. You can personalize with touches like a decorative basket as an "in box" and fun prints and paintings for the walls. Don't forget photos of your family, friends and pets. They will bring a smile and help reduce your stress level.

* Just add water. A desktop fountain, fresh flowers or a fishbowl can add ambience and a sense of style and tranquility to your office space.

* Don't forget the finishing touches. Use a pre-made slipcover to add style and color to that tired old desk chair. Switch out those boring manila folders with decorative patterned ones. They make work fun! Show some individuality with your mouse pad. You can purchase a mouse pad featuring an art masterpiece or cartoon character, depending on your theme and mood. A whimsical clock, fun paperweight or funky plant could be just what you need to make the space more "you."

Throughout the United States many consumers and businesses are electing to purchase bottled drinking water instead of tap or well water. The trend is clearly on the rise. A recent study of the bottled water industry indicates that U.S. bottled water sales and consumption continue to multiply at double digit rates as consumers and businesses increasingly choose bottled water as a beverage of choice. (Source: International Bottle Water Association Press Release dated April 13, 2006, http://www.bottledwater.org) Many consumers are choosing bottled drinking water over tap or well water because of the level of contaminants and bad chlorine related taste.

This increase in demand is significant as bottled water has also gained considerable share from the Carbonated Soft Drink (CSD) market. The CSD market share was also reduced as a result of the recent program to ban the sale of CSD products in school systems.

Private label drinking water is the fastest growing segment of the total bottled water industry.

• Why the Strong Demand for Bottled Water?

The continued growth in bottled water consumption is mainly comprised of four elements, which are as follows:

• Good taste and quality of the product
• Convenience of delivery
• Supplier customer service
• A product line offering that meets the needs of the customer

Country-wide, the bottled water industry has moved quickly to respond to the needs of the market and customers, which results in the increase in bottled water demand and consumption. This trend has also proved evident in the heavily populated area of Northern Virginia in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area.

• The Northern Virginia Market for Bottled Water

Northern Virginia population has grown dramatically in the last ten years largely due to the massive homeland security build up after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This huge influx of population stressed the existing water infrastructure for both tap and well water. Tap water, although tested against FDA standards, still contained a number of potentially hazardous minerals and chlorine additives to kill bacteria. Well water, subjected to chemical and organic pollution and not tested by any government agency, proved also to be undesirable and not beneficial to health.

The State of Virginia ranks among the highest in terms of violation of EPA maximum contaminant levels. The constant influx of population into Northern Virginia will continue to stress the water infrastructure. (Source: Water on Tap: What You Need to Know: http://www.epa.gov/safewater/wot/pdfs/book_waterontap_full.pdf )

Many of the new arrivals in Northern Virginia are young urban professionals with young families. Most of these people seek healthy alternatives for their drinking water supplies.

Because of water quality problems in Northern Virginia, the growth in bottled water demand seen throughout the country is repeated locally. Strong demand for high-quality, good tasting water coupled with the convenience of local delivery resulted in the emergence of bottled water firms with product and service offerings of varying quality.

• 5 Valuable Tips for Selecting a Bottled Water Supplier

In Northern Virginia there are many choices facing the consumer that seek an alternative to tap and well water. It should be revealed, however, that the many suppliers in the market are diverse and not uniform in their product quality and service offerings. The best suppliers meet the customer’s expectations in 5 critical areas: Tips for the best choice in each area are listed below.

1. Quality and Taste of Water

Choose the purest, best tasting water. There are many types of water that vary in quality and taste. The United Sates Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines a number of water categories including Spring Water (water from an underground source) and Purified Water (including distilled water). Each category defines a specific type of bottled water with Purified Water containing no minerals or other contaminants.

In addition to quality, taste is an important consideration. The taste of bottled water should be light and refreshing without any hint of after taste. Not all bottled water products meet these criteria, but those that do are very popular. Take a taste test before deciding to purchase.

Purified Water removes all contaminants, which allows many experts to believe that the distilled/oxygenated Purified Water process produces the highest quality, best tasting bottled water.

2. Broad Product Offering

The consumer should look for a company that offers home delivery of high-quality coolers, 5 gallon jugs, small package (12 and 20 oz.), PET products and water accessories. All products should be user friendly and commercial grade with bottle handles, spill-proof caps and other features that ensure the water supply will be convenient and safe.

Since private label water is now available for corporate events, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and other memorable occasions, a supplier that offers private label drinking water combined with high-quality private label design and production is a plus.

3. Total Customer Satisfaction

Many bottled water suppliers promise customer satisfaction, but few deliver on that promise. A good way to test whether a supplier can guarantee satisfaction is to place a telephone call to the supplier’s customer service department. If you reach a human voice on your first call then probabilities are very high that you will receive customer satisfaction; if you receive voicemail or a recording however, then the supplier values cost cutting more than customer service.

Poor customer service will rapidly offset a seemingly low price. Consider total value including customer service and product quality before agreeing to a “price only “offer.

4. Ease of Ordering

Ease of ordering should be a priority and long term contracts should be avoided. Frequently, some suppliers will quote a very low price but require an onerous one-sided long term contract. The best way to order is with a simple agreement that does not include penalties for cancellation and is customer oriented.

Ordering off the internet is very convenient if the site is truly interactive. Choose a supplier that has an interactive site where a customer can select the type and amount of water, establish delivery schedules, use a credit card for payment with guaranteed security and modify their account on demand.

A limited number of suppliers offer the ability to design private label drinking water on the internet through highly interactive e-commerce sites. The best sites offer multiple layered tools that provide for advanced graphic design and powerful label messages.

Those suppliers who have invested in a powerful, interactive site offer their customers added convenience and flexibility when creating brand messages on private label drinking water.

5. Complementary Products

Home and office delivery of bottled water also offers a distribution channel for other products like coffee and tea. Similar to bottled water, complementary products often vary greatly in quality and customer service satisfaction. The consumer should choose a supplier who offers products of high-quality supported by the best customer service.

Bottled water offers a healthy alternative to tap and well water in Northern Virginia; and home and office delivery offers convenience to consumers and businesses. The quality of product and service offerings in the marketplace differs significantly however. Therefore it is beneficial to the consumer to investigate any potential bottled water supplier with care.

Guide To Home Office Internet Access

The Internet has become a "must have" tool for every type of office - especially the home office.

No home office is complete without an Internet connection, because more and more business is being conducted on the Internet, and if you are not connected you are missing out on a great opportunity to connect with your clients, potential clients and of course your suppliers. Internet access will provide you with many opportunities to increase your productivity, although you will want to be careful that you do not use the Internet as a distraction or that it doesn't become one by accident.

The first thing that you will need to do is to contact your local Internet provider. There may be a few in your area, so shop around for the best deal before you sign up. Often there are Internet providers competing for your business so you should get a good deal. There will be a few different levels of service and speed that you can choose from. If you are going to be sending a lot of files, or large files through the Internet, you will want high speed service. However, if you do not plan on using the Internet much, you may want to opt for a dial up connection if you are on a budget. Do bear in mind that dialup is being offered by fewer Internet providers each and every day.

Once you have the Internet access you will need to set up an email account for your business for clients to contact you. More and more people are using email to contact friends and family so you will not want to miss out of this invaluable connection tool. When you set up an email address you should keep it simple and easy to remember. However, it is important to keep it professional aswell. Keep it as close to the name of your business as possible.

If you really want to maximize your growth and productivity, you should consider starting a webpage for your business. A webpage is a great way to tell people about you and what you do. On your webpage you can easily show off your skills, or pictures of your products. Include information on pricing or rates to make it simple for potential clients. And be sure that you make it easy for potential clients to contact you if they have more questions. With more and more people surfing the Internet these days, you can take advantage of this inexpensive marketing tool.

While having Internet access is a great boost to your business, you must be careful to avoid the trap of the Internet as well. It is easy to get lost surfing the Internet or sending emails and lose productivity. Be sure that you monitor yourself to stay productive while you are working from home. It is a good idea to turn your email off and only check it at designated times every day instead of every time you get a new message. At least this way you can stay focused on the tasks you need to complete - those that are a priority.

Commercial Office Space - Don't Waste Your Money

Commercial office space is unnecessary when you first start out in computer consulting. Your clients will not be coming to you, you will go to them so do not waste your money on renting commercial office space.

Article Body:

Commercial office space is unnecessary when you first start out in computer consulting. Unless you have a very compelling reason for renting commercial office space, save your money. You're much better plowing that money back into marketing and promotional expenses.

Even a tiny commercial office space is going to be $400 - $600 a month. A low traffic retail store is even more; at least a $1000-$2000 per month. Rather than waste that money on commercial office space, invest it in marketing and business development. You're going to need to do these things whether you have commercial office space or not. There is no reason to add to your overhead expenses.

When you start out, a home office is the best choice. Until you bring on a lot of staff, it’s really not going to benefit you to have a commercial office space. Most of the time you will be servicing clients at their office, going on sales calls, or attending networking events.

In computer consulting your clients will not be coming to you. You go to them. The time you spend in your own office is minimal. The money you spend on your office space should be minimal as well.

You might think that you need commercial office space if you want to run seminars. These are an excellent marketing tool but you can rent executive office space very reasonably. This type of commercial office space is rented on an as need basis by the hour or day.

The Bottom Line on Commercial Office Space

Commercial office space is expensive. There is no reason to put yourself on the hook for $500 or $1,000 a month or more, every single month just to be able to do say you have an office. The time you or your clients spend in your office does not warrant renting commercial office space. Use your home office for as long as you can and rent out space by the hour or day as you need it.

Choosing Quality Office Accessories

Whether it involves home offices or Fortune 500 companies, careful consideration in furnishing and accessorizing your office could make a difference in health and comfort of the body as well as simple wear and tear of office flooring.

Selecting quality office furniture and accessories such as lighting, desks, chairs and floor mats, requires more than just a passing thought. Whether it involves home offices or Fortune 500 companies, careful consideration in furnishing and accessorizing your office could make a difference in health and comfort of the body as well as simple wear and tear of office flooring.

The Importance of Lighting
Lighting has a profound influence on a person’s performance in the office. With accurate lighting, it could reduce double vision, headaches and fatigue caused by reflectivity of bright objects such as printed paperwork or computer monitors in excess lighting. The human eye can adjust to a variety of lighting levels, but only a single light level at a time. When someone stares at a dim computer monitor in a brightly lit room, the eyes are confused about which to adapt to, light or dimness.

Common lighting preferred in offices is most times track lighting or ceiling lights. If installing track lighting, it is suggested to avoid high-voltage halogen. This type of lighting has been found excessively rigorous for prolonged exposure. Desk lamps are a variable form of subsidiary lighting. An office desk lamp can add a charismatic design, as well as a glare-free atmosphere that will help prevent eyestrain and fatigue.

Choosing the Right Desk
Space is always a concern when it comes to choosing the right desk. If your desk has restricted space, you may have a need for a desk designed for more than a single purpose. Your office tasks may require space for a printer, fax, phone, shelves, drawers or files. With the absence of needed space, desktops become cluttered and finding things can become a difficult undertaking.

Purchasing the best desk for an office is an important investment that could last a business’s lifetime. Time and consideration are key in choosing a desk. There are an ostensibly endless assortment of desks in sizes and shape. Desks are normally produced in mass quantities and may necessitate some self-assembly. Checking into a local crafts business that could build desks to order may be something to look into.

A Comfortable Chair Can Alleviate Back Pain and Poor Circulation
Back support and leg circulation are critical to good posture and wellness while working. Sitting at a desk for lengthy periods can be extremely challenging since it applies excessive pressure to the lower back and upper thighs which causes leg discomfort or back pain. Keeping the backbone in a neutral position is essential in maintaining good posture and alleviating the annoyance of back pain and poor blood circulation.

A person’s desk chair should accommodate them. If another individual is using the chair, it is important for the chair to have sufficient adjustability to suit each user. When searching for a desk chair, look for a “waterfall edge” located at the front of the chairs seat pan. This design helps to prevent deficient circulation in the legs while sitting. Try to find a chair with a “tilt lever” which enables you to recline and switch positions easily. This will help relieve pressure placed on the back of your thighs. A protruding “back rest” on your chair will help support the lumbar while in an upright position.

Minimizing Maintenance Costs on Flooring
When it comes to protecting office floors, depending on the type of flooring, maintenance can involve waxing, stripping, buffing or replacement. When an individual is working at their desk, they may not always be confined to one area. Their work may include rolling from their desk to a file cabinet, telephone, wastebasket or another desk. No matter which type of flooring is used in an office, wear and tear becomes apparent. Carpet fibers are pulled up, linoleum is punctured, and hardwood or tile floors are damaged. Most flooring types are not designed for the tremendous amount of pressure generated by rolling office chairs. They may also not be appropriate for wheel chair accessibility. Utilizing chair mats could limit the safety issues involved where an area is not properly floored for wheel chairs and at the same time, minimize the maintenance needed to any floor.

Selecting a needed chair mat for any workstation starts by determining what type of flooring the mat will be covering. Chair mats used over carpeting should be more unbending and impenetrable than those placed on harder surfaces. Chair mats for tile, linoleum or hard wood surfaces should be textured. This will prevent the mat from sliding on slick floors. They should also have beveled edges to enable easy rolling between surfaces. Once we know the floor type, the desired shape and size is chosen. For example: How much floor space is used while working at your desk and its surrounding areas? Chair mats should cover more than the immediate area in front of a desk. Otherwise the areas not protected from chair casters may require maintenance that could have been avoided.

Purchasing office furniture and accessories are not quite as unambiguous as you might have thought. There are numerous factors involved in choosing accurate lighting, a comfortable chair, a spacious desk and appropriate chair mats. Anticipated by the measure of time spent working in the office each day, ignoring these factors could result in strained eyes, bad posture, desk clutter and avoidable damage and maintenance. The main idea is to optimize your productivity without contributing to physical tension. Keep that in mind the next time you accessorize your office space.

Efficiency in the Office

We are not talking sales figures or profit margins or budgets, but inefficient waste and resource management. For instance, let us look at some common aspects and consider how consumption can be reduced and how to make better use of resources.

Not all paper work and receipts need to be shredded, but sometimes, for the sake of security, it is necessary. This shredded paper is recyclable or it can be contributed in layers to a compost or worm bin. It can also be donated to animal shelters or pet stores where it is used in the bottom of cages to help keep them clean. This will ease workloads on staff, keep operational costs down, and the animals are more comfortable in their cages. The animal waste along with the bedding is easily composted.

Technology now makes it possible to save paper on a daily basis by sending emails. Worth mentioning, is the time saved as compared to communicating via the postal system. When sending a fax, if possible, refrain from using a cover sheet. For efficient paper use at the photocopy machine, set it to automatically print pages on both sides. When making draft copies with the photocopier or printer, use the reverse side of any suitable scrap paper. We keep a box of this paper handy for visiting children to color and draw upon. The blank side of any scrap paper can be used for shopping lists, reminder notes, game scoring, or the perpetual to do list(s) that we all have.

We often use sheets of adhesive labels in our office printer. The edges, top and bottom of each used sheet have 1/4" of remaining unused material. These can be trimmed to convenient lengths and stored in a small jar (or other storage container of choice). These labels come in handy when labeling items destined for the freezer, jam jars, bulk foods or shop and craft supplies.

Keep computer equipment such as external drives, printers and scanners powered off when they are not in use – turn them on only for the duration that they are needed. Stand-by power (lights or clock displays) can be eliminated by either using a power bar or by manually unplugging the equipment. Sleep the computer during the day when not in use (lunch, coffee, or meetings) and turn all equipment off before leaving at the end of the day.
These are some simple suggestions, yet they will save time, money, and resources, which is in the best interest of any office.

Civilization 4 and Why I Hate My Office Phone

If you're familiar with the strategy PC gaming series "Civilization", you probably know that it's only slightly less addictive than crack. I've never tried crack, but the "word on the street", so to speak, is that it's a bit hard to let go of. I recently purchased Civilization 4, which is the latest in the Civilization series.

That in itself isn't so interesting, but what happened to me at my job as a result of it most certainly is. I work as a network administrator for a large insurance company in Illinois.

Part of my job is to repair PC's as needed, which is quite often considering how many there are around this place. I informed my coworker, also a big civilization fan that I had the game and he suggested I bring it in for a little test run. Against my better judgment, we decided to play a hot seat game during work. "Hot seat" means that one player takes a turn, followed by the other, which is only possible with turn based games such as Civ. We both figured that there would always be one of us to answer the phone in our little repair-shop cubbyhole so we didn't see how we could possibly get caught. Boy were we wrong! About four hours into a game things started getting interesting.

My civilization found his civilization and we started going to war against each other, as one might expect. I sat down for my turn and my coworker decided to head off to the bathroom. The phone rang, and I didn't pick up so that whoever was on the other end wouldn't hear the Civ theme music or the explosive sound of my Panzers running over his infantry. What I failed to remember is that our advanced phone system allows anyone to communicate with us on an open speaker phone provided we aren't on the phone already. My boss utilized this function since no one answered while I was taking my turn...o.k., actually while I was taking my turn and bragging out loud to myself about how well I was doing in the game. I found myself in his office that afternoon, but luckily I was only reprimanded and not fired. Not only did I get into trouble, my coworker continues to make jokes about it at my expense.

I hate my office phone.

You started a business. You bought a suit. You received your business and license and all you need now is an office where you can spend the next year of your life getting your business off the ground. The last thing you want is to look to customers like your company doesn't make enough to stay in business. Let's face it. Appearance is everything.

So how do you put an office together without much money? We found a few companies that you can bet on for all the high-quality stuff you need, at affordable prices, and no hidden charges. Ready? Pay attention!

The most important online company we found was Versa Tables. Never heard of them? You have now! Versa Tables designs and manufactures high-quality, affordable, computer furniture for offices and schools, and best of all, ships directly to the consumer without a middle man. And anyone can order from their online site.

For our demonstration, we ordered five attractive black vinyl side chairs (two for your office and three for the reception area), two 48-inch Enclosed Classroom Desks, two task chairs, and two ergonomically enhanced Deluxe Keyboard Arms and Trays for comfort. The whole thing cost us less than $1800, leaving an extra $200 for a few framed pictures, plants, or even a fish tank.

The best thing about Versa Tables—besides their high-end, attractive furniture—is that they don't charge for shipping at all. So what the site says you'll pay, is exactly what you'll pay. No hidden handling fees or weight fees for shipping heavy desks and chairs. They also accept PayPal.

In addition to the basic office furniture, you'll need some supplies: staplers, pens, paper, desk organizers, calendars, etc. We found an impressive variety of products from file containers to pencil sharpeners at Target online. Another great online source is Green Light Office. The site actually tells you if they have the lowest price or not on each item.

When decorating an office, keep in mind that aesthetics are everything. You want your office to look inviting, clean, neat, and convey an image of success. Avoid furniture that's too big for the space, plastic plants, and colors that don't match. Purchase all your office furniture from one source, ensuring the colors work together and the style of the pieces you've chosen are compatible. You don't need to be an interior designer to do this.

Purchasing everything from one source will guarantee that they'll work.

As a small business, you probably won't have retailers bending over backward to get your business, but that's okay. Going direct to the manufacturer's websites can often give you the same prices the 'big guys' get without having to prove yourself first. It's always a good idea as well to start building good credit as soon as you can so that your application will pass when you'd like to begin using purchase orders. The privilege of being able to send a purchase order (which is basically a written guarantee that you'll pay for whatever you're buying so the company will process your order prior to you actually paying for it) only comes with good credit, which is priceless.

Ever since I joined the company two years ago. I noticed that I wasn't really that welcome in the department, at least, as far as some of my co-workers were concerned. There was a small group of women that was always “at the top of the game.” Then I came along. Excited and eager to prove myself, I actively participated in office meetings and made sure I shared my ideas and suggestions. My mistake! I blamed it on my inexperience. Welcome to the world of office politics! During meetings, rarely would they address me and ask for my thoughts. Whenever I make jokes to lighten up the mood, they would roll their eyes and ignore me. I admit, I do have a strong personality. Things became worse when my boss complimented me for doing a good job on a client presentation. Now, I feel like a ghost whenever I am around them because nobody seems to notice my presence. My boss told me to just ignore them but the situation has affected my morale and it is already causing me so much stress and anxiety.

If you happen to be in a room full of successful people, chances are, you'd notice that they all have a common denominator: They know how to get along with people. While you would notice that the people who are alone their cubicles or workstations, oblivious of the comings and goings around them, are the ones who can't get along with others. This is a time-tested theory. Successful people are out having lunch with others. The ones you've never heard of, eats alone in the far corner of the cafeteria. That is the reality. When you fit in and get along with others, you can succeed and thrive in almost everything.

Whether you like it or not, interpersonal skills play a big role in the office. However, not all of us are aware or have the ability to get along with people at work. Here are some suggestions on how to get along with others:

Manage your pride. There is a possibility that you might be wrong. We all have had the experience of being criticized. Many of us initially respond by saying,“Who do you think you are? I'm better than you!” But if the criticism comes from more than one or two persons, then you must learn to accept that the comments about you might be justified. Maybe your actions or how you conduct yourself in the office needs to be adjusted or modified so that you can get along with others.

Realize that some of us have “bad days.” Your friends and co-workers have lives of their own. If one of them is in a bad mood, it's not simply your fault, and its not your job to cheer that person up. Same as for customer who wouldn't want to close the deal with you because of a hang-over. You simply have no control for situations like that.

Be understanding. strive to make friends among your colleagues. As the saying goes if you want to have friend, be a friend. It might sound old-fashioned, but it still works and is very applicable in the corporate world. If you want your colleagues to like you, be a friend to them. Be supportive. Offer your help once in a while.

Always look for the good in others that is the key. It's no big secret. If you want to avoid conflicts don't gossip. Even if you have brains and talent but poor in interpersonal skills, it won't be fun working in the office when you are making enemies.
