Character Education and its Benefits to our Children

Good character education is one of the most important things our children will learn in life. The benefits are positive and the outcome will lead our children into successful lives, as well as becoming a good citizen.

Article Body:

The Definition
Character education involves teaching children about basic human values including honesty, kindness, generosity, courage, freedom, equality and respect.

The goal is to raise children to become morally responsible, self-disciplined citizens. Problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution are important parts of developing moral character. Through role playing and discussions, children can see that their decisions affect other people and things.

Inclusive Concept
Character education is an inclusive concept regarding all aspects of how families, schools, and related social institutions support the positive character development of children. Character in this context refers to the moral and ethical qualities of persons as well as the demonstration of those qualities in their emotional responses, reasoning, and behavior. Character is associated with such virtues as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Broadly, character education encompasses all aspects of the influence that families, schools, and other social institutions have on the positive character development of children. Character Education is the deliberate effort to help people understand, care about and act upon core ethical values.

What Does Character Education Look Like?
Character education looks like young people learning, growing, and becoming. It feels like strength, courage, possibility, and hope. Giving life meaning, purpose, and a future is the collective message educators are sharing with youth in a curriculum that ultimately says, "Together we can."

We need to practice moral education by means of explanation — not simply stuffing students' heads with rules and regulations, but engaging them in great moral conversations about the human race. The very existence of this dialogue helps make us human.

How can Children benefit
Embedded in character education are guidelines for successful living. The language of respect and responsibility navigates the journey to ethical fitness. Children explore education as life and life as learning positive approaches for setting and achieving goals.

Children learn that living each day to its fullest means more than waiting for moments here and there. Character education presents life with context, inviting them to listen, share, explore, and reflect. Cultivating knowledge for purposeful living, students learn through literature, art, humanities and throughout the existing school curriculum the benefits and consequences of behavior. They learn the power of choice. They learn to appreciate the qualities of being human and to share their appreciation at home, in school, and in the community.

Finding Time
Many stories in children's literature, for example, reflect lessons in morals and virtues; we can read and discuss these moral lessons without taking time from core subjects. Character education also fits well with social studies and health topics. Accepting individual differences, showing courage, developing citizenship, taking responsibility for oneself, and making positive, so the hurdle of finding time for character education becomes less intimidating. Also, talking about good character traits fits naturally into the scheme of setting up a successful primary classroom. When we introduce games in math, we could review the ideas of fairness and cooperation.

Practicing Cooperative Learning Techniques
Partner and small-group learning activities are natural complements to character education, providing children with opportunities to practice cooperation, respect, teamwork, and responsibility. Children usually enjoy cooperative activities, and working with peers is a brain-friendly technique that enhances learning (Jensen, 1996).

School staff members serve as troubleshooters between students and the individuals or agencies in need of assistance. Such service programs teach valuable humanitarian skills. Through these activities, abstract concepts like justice and community become real as students see the faces of the lives they touch. Children begin to appreciate the need to couple moral thinking with moral action.

Does It Work?
Can character education really make a difference? Teaching about character is just as important as teaching the basics of writing, math, and reading. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education" (1947). Educators should work in partnership with families and communities to give children every opportunity to grow into people of good character, and especially to counteract society's potentially negative influences. Character education cannot cure all the world's evils, but it can improve and influence children in positive ways, giving them the skills that they will need to be successful adults.

Expectations of Excellence
Children need standards and the skills to achieve them. They need to see themselves as students engaged in a continuing pursuit of excellence. These standards of excellence in school work and behavior will encourage students to develop qualities like perseverance and determination, and those virtues will affect every aspect of the children's lives as they mature.

Academic studies change rapidly; what we discuss in class today becomes passé tomorrow. But the values, moral influences and noteworthy characteristics we model and discuss will outlast academic facts and figures. We can leave our children a legacy that will remain constant throughout life: to know the good, love the good and do the good.

Health Care Education in the 21st Century

The health care industry and the Internet have always made uneasy bedfellows, although the relationship has improved dramatically in recent years. Initially, when the Internet was less regulated, health care professionals were crying foul at the proliferation of unlicensed pharmacies and unlicensed practitioners doing business via the World Wide Web. While those complaints have subsided coinciding with a new set of laws for e-commerce, many health care professionals are still wary of the influence of the Internet on the industry as a whole.

Some medical practitioners lauded the onslaught of web sites that offer free medical information while others saw it as an intrusion to their authority. Health care education suffered the same fate for quite some time. While many in the medical community saw an opportunity to expand the opportunities for health care education, others were skeptical.

Today, it is accepted that an online education is just as viable for most areas of study as a traditional campus education. While there are some positions in health care that will always require hands on learning, many can be effectively taught online. Most universities that offer online curriculum are now making degree programs in health care available. Administrative programs are the most widely offered, although there are several that lean toward the clinical side of the industry. Nurses, in particular, have a variety of choices when it comes to online education. Several bachelors of Science degrees in nursing have become a popular way for nurses with LPN or RN licensure to advance their education.

The emergence of online educational opportunities for the health care industry will have a positive effect in the next several years. With an aging baby boomer population, positions in health care are expected to rise well above the average for all other industries. New positions will be created and both new and existing positions will need to be filled. Online degree programs offer many the chances to work in the health care industry that otherwise might not be able to because of scheduling conflicts that keep them from attending traditional universities.

Continuing Education for Nurses

An article on the importance of continuing education for nursing.

The following article relates not only to nurses but also to those aspiring to enter the noble profession of nursing. We hope you will get some insight into this field.
Although we have used the female reference for nurses throughout this article ("she", "her"), this is done purely for convenience and in no way reflects the gender status of nurses in today's society.

Most people assume that once a nurse has completed her education and has become registered, that is the "end" and that no more learning or education is required. This couldn't be further from the truth. There's more to nursing then just tending and looking after patients.

It is highly critical that a nurse maintain and continue her ongoing education and is kept current on her profession. This is an integral part of maintaining her registration.

A nurse’s life in the 21st century is extremely fast paced. There are medical advances in precedures almost on a daily basis and it is essential that a nurse is kept abreast and is at the forefront of these improvements. This requires a high level of time management and dedication to improve oneself in addition to spending long hours in clinics and hospitals. Of course this is much easier said than done.

It is in the best interests of a good hospital to provide everything needed for nurses to continue their education. A good hospital will also more than likely pay for the education of their nurses. A lack of funds should not be a deterrent to a nurse continuing her education.

Many nurses regularly subscribe to nursing periodicals and magazines to keep up to date with their ongoing education.. Nurses are encouraged to go through the relavent published journals on a regular basis.

Of course let's not forget that just as important to success is the keeping of portfolios and timely documentation detailing all the training and education received throughout the nursing carreer. This written journal also serves as a method of organizing in an orderly manner, all the continuing education undertaken.

Admittedly, there exists a challenge with regards to access to this education for nurses, namely the expense, since nursing is still not considered to be among the better paid professions. This challenge to accessibility can perhaps be met by employers coming forward and funding the continuing education of registered nurses.

Please be sure to check out the many additional resources available on this topic online.

Education is the Key to Effective Referral Marketing

Educating referral sources is the best way to make certain that you receive referral leads that fit your ideal target market.

One of the few complaints I hear from small business owners when it comes to generating business or leads by way of referral is that too many of the referrals they are offered aren’t a fit for the business. The referrals are either unqualified, don’t need the firm’s offerings, can’t afford the product or just don’t fit the typical profile of an ideal client for the receiving firm.

If this is your referral reality, then you know that chasing leads that don’t fit your target client can be a grand waste of everyone’s time and energy. The primary reason for this affliction though is that most small business owners and independent professionals don’t take the time to educate their referral sources.

The typical referral request may go something like – “know anybody that needs what we do?” Okay, I know lots of people, here you go. Have at it!

The solution to this is really quite simple. I’ve created a tool I call the Perfect Introduction, as part of my Referral Flood program. The Perfect Introduction is a document (although is can take many forms including a web page) that contains answers to the following questions.

How would know if I spotted your ideal client?

Describe, in great detail, the type of clients you work best with. This step will help assure that you get highly qualified leads and make it easier for your lead source to think of prospects that fit a narrow description.

What would I say to best position your business?

Give your referral source the exact words you would like them to use when introducing your products and services to prospective referrals. Give them a simple, memorable way to explain the benefits you have to offer. Remember, many of your best referral sources may not be actual clients who can talk eloquently about your brilliance, give them your core marketing message so that the expectation they set remains consistent.

How can you add value to my relationship with a referred lead?

This is a multi answer question. Show your prospective referral source what you do to make them look good and outline any offer you might have cooked up to reward and motivate your referral sources. By the way, money isn’t always the best referral motivator. Showing appreciation, helping referral sources meet their goals, and making referral sources look good are all powerful motivators.

What do you do with the leads you receive by way of referral?

Outline the exact steps you take when you receive a name or introduction. This step allow the referral source to get comfortable with your marketing process. Everyone has some fear that the referred party may abuse the relationship by hard selling or calling every night at dinner time. Put these fears to rest by outlining your very educational approach. (That is your approach, right?)

Now that you have your Perfect Introduction document in hand you can go out there and confidently let the world know that you are someone they can feel great about referring.

Another very powerful aspect of this tool is that often, even if you don’t realize it, you are in competition with others who are seeking referrals. CPAs, for instance, are heavily targeted by service professionals seeking referrals. With your referral process outlined in a very professional manner, you will stand out in the referral competition for some of the best potential referral sources.

And Now a Powerful Twist

Once you have created your Perfect Introduction you should also consider using this tool to open doors with potential referral sources. Send a letter to 100 targeted referral sources with a copy of your Perfect Introduction and a blank Perfect Introduction form. Inform the recipient that you have clients and prospects that you believe could benefit from their products and services. Ask them to complete the enclosed Perfect Introduction form (using yours as an example) and send it back to you as soon as possible. Do this and you will find new referral marketing doors swinging wide open for you. In addition, you will be better prepared to give referrals to your clients and prospects, kicking the referral cycle into even higher gear.
