You know, if you ever took a middle school earth science class, what a niche is. If you didn't well...a niche is an area where a person (whoever the niche is for) is able to survive and thrive. It has many different specific types but the fundamental idea is that is a place specially suited for a thing to not only make it but succeed in it. So niche marketing is finding a particular market where you are able to find success marketing your specific product. Some people have a product and find a market and some find a market and develop a product but the general idea remains the same.

So how do you find your niche in niche marketing? Well the answer is both straight forward and complex. First you need to find an area where the knowledge and/or skills that you possess make it possible to develop a product that is sought after. For example a person who has been raised on a farm in the middle of South Dakota will more likely find his niche in agriculture rather than fashion design. It also must be a place that you have energy for. You must want to get up and work hard on something in order to succeed at it and there is nothing harder than working hard no something that you despise.

Another important concept in niche marketing that should be kept in mind is that it is helpful to find an area where you can be at the top of the competition. So burgeoning fields where you have the latest and greatest knowledge are natural areas to exploit. The laws of supply and demand in economics are very helpful for finding a profitable niche. That is to say that you need to find an area where the supply is low and the demand is high in order to get the best profit scenario. This is why professional sports players are able to make so much, if you have ever wondered. It's because there are only a few people in the world that are able to play that particular sport at that level (the supply is low) and people absolutely love sports (the demand is high).

The beauty of the internet is that it literally gives you instant exposure to every market that there is in the world. This allows you to take advantage of whatever your particular skill is (for example making surf boards), even if your geographical area would otherwise limit you (for example you live in Siberia).

The key to attracting new customers to your business, whether online or off, lies in understanding a few simple things about how the brain works. Usually at an unconscious level, people are constantly scanning their environment to separate the relevant from the irrelevant, the safe from the potentially hazardous, the desirable from the unappealing. The major challenge for the small business marketer is discover what motivates their target audience, and then to speak as directly as possible to those fears, desires, goals, priorities, and needs.

But it Worked in the Movies

You’re only kidding yourself if you think you can be all things to all people. That insidious form of self deception falls in the same category as ‘If you build it, they will come’. Woody Allen is quoted as saying that ‘Eighty percent of success is showing up’, but bear in mind that comedy (and sometimes drama) is often based on exaggeration. Showing up -- which can range from creating an Internet presence to attending networking meetings -- is a good start, but it generally won’t get you too far unless you throw in a dash of originality, competitiveness, and a strategic plan of action.

Since people are constantly looking for specialized information, services, and products, a strategy worth pursuing is to devote at least 50% of your marketing efforts to reaching niche markets. Granted, marketing is no more of a ‘one size fits all’ endeavor than anything else, but what isn’t going to change is the fact that people are generally drawn to things that are customized, personalized, or otherwise geared to their personal preferences.

Are You Talking to Me?

Considering that your prospective clients and customers are continually scanning the Internet, the media, and their environment for information that’s relevant to them, why not tip the scales in your favor by tailoring your marketing message directly to the different niche markets you’re trying to reach? Whether it’s senior citizens, new homeowners, parents to be, recent graduates, newlyweds, or frustrated job hunters, capturing people’s attention can sometimes be as simple as recognizing them as individuals or as a member of a specific demographic group.

For example, have you ever inadvertently ignored someone who was saying to you ‘excuse me’ or ‘you dropped something’; but if they called you by your name, you’d immediately snap out of your haze and pay attention. Again, it’s just a matter of breaking through people’s filtering systems and being noticed. That’s often the number one step to effectively marketing your products, your services, or yourself. Actually, I’d break that down into three parts: get noticed, connect with your prospect, and put them in a receptive state of mind. If you convey the impression, right off the bat, that your service or product is tailor made for their needs, wants, or specific situation, then you may have fulfilled all three requirements in one fell swoop.

Once you’ve clearly and compellingly presented your case for making your prospect’s life easier, more secure, healthier, more comfortable, prosperous, convenient, happier, or more problem free, your remaining challenge is to anticipate objections, lower sales resistance, and inject your offer with a subtle, yet perceptible sense of urgency. If you’ve painted a vivid, benefits-filled picture of your service or product, their motivation to experience those advantages will help you convert them from a prospect to a customer.

Who am I and what do I love to do? Well, isn't this the twenty million dollar question! A more appropriate question might be "Who was I and what did I love to do?"

As you search to find yourself, and what it is you love to do, you may find the task harder than you thought it would be. Try to think about your childhood. Can you remember what thrilled you as a child? Like many people you've probably forgotten what brought try joy and excitement to your essence.

Children instinctively just "know" what they love. We quickly forget what makes us happy as we grow into adults. External influences eventually diminish the thought of actually "doing what we love to do."

When I was a child I vaguely remember wanting to be a stewardess, a mother of 8 (don't know why it had to be 8, sounds rather ambitious in today's world), and a musician. Well, didn't every little girl who grew up in my world want to be a stewardess? It seemed so. Or, could it have been a clue to what really was the essence of me? Maybe I longed to travel and this was what society offered at the time.

I did have a musical inclination. I seemed to learn to play clarinet fast, and was quite good for a beginner. Never got past the beginning, victim of circumstances, but that's another long story. I could pick a tune on the piano by ear and dreamed of being able to sit down and flawlessly play the most beautiful of compositions. But, that didn't happen.

The mom thing? Don't know where that came from. Maybe the caring side of me. Maybe just that period most little girls go through where they emulate their mother and "play house." Who knows?
But, I did grow up to be the mother of four. I quickly learned that 8 was really ambitious. Some days, I don't know how I survive the four. I'm far from super mom status, but I guess I don't do too bad.

I've found recently, through self searching and pondering, that the question of "who am I?" becomes increasingly difficult with age and life's interference. Yes, life interference can be very damaging to our happiness. Our experiences tend to mold us into the person we are today. By the way, that isn't necessarily who we were meant to be.

Have you ever longed to be able to do something you are passionate about and truly loved as a child. Maybe it's some form of art; painting, drawing, crafting, dancing, or singing. Maybe you enjoyed building things or, taking things apart and putting them back together. Or, were you the mathematical genius in the class? Did you love to play school and teach real or imaginary children?

Childhood is innocence. As children we accept our true essence without question and pursue it daily in our real and imaginary play. It is life and life's external influences that re-route us away from what we love to do. We are too quickly discourage from the pursuit of happiness.

It is apparent in many happy, successful, adults that there is a often a common denominator. Most extremely successful people really love doing what they do. They live their work. They strive to be better and better at it. They never dread going to work and are always thinking about new ways to improve. They simply love the work. They "live to work" not "work to live."

America's most famous billionaire, Malcolm Forbes, reflected this same belief, that you should do what you love to do to be successful, in several of his statements:

"Success follows doing what you want to do. There is no other way to be successful."

"When what we are is what we want to be, that's happiness."

"The biggest mistake people make in life is not trying to make a living at doing what they most enjoy."

These quotes from Malcolm Forbes pretty much sum up the importance of doing what you love to do.

Everyone should pursue what they love to do. Then work at doing what they love. You may say "It's too late." It's never too late to rediscover your childhood passions. It's certainly never too late to start getting some satisfaction and enjoyment out of life. If only for own pleasure, you should pursue what you love to do.

Whatever it is you feel you would love to do, go for it. Take an art, singing, dancing, literature, accounting, computer, home decorating ,or mechanic class. Invest in yourself and your happiness. You may find that through pursuing what you love, you will find your best work. Share your knowledge, passion, or talent with others. You will see yourself become confident and successful at what you love to do.

I found that my favorite thing to do is to simply be a housewife and mother. Maybe it's not "just being a mom." Rather, it's doing the things required to be a housewife and mom. It's not a glamorous career. But, it does require quite a few skills. Moms are usually very talented in more than a few areas; art, organization, accounting, negotiating, and decorating are just a few that come to mind.

My favorite task is saving money. A family of six makes saving money pretty much a requirement of my job but, I've found that I Love IT! I get great satisfaction in getting the most for my money, getting things for free, and managing a household on a very limited income. So, in order to expand on my happiness, I decided to share my knowledge with others. I actually have fun sharing my ideas and money saving tips. And, I enjoy researching and finding more money saving tips for myself and others.

Sometimes, it seems like I can't pull myself away from my work. That's because I love it so much. I love it, I am passionate about it, and I believe in it! Enthusiasm is contagious. If I can get others excited about saving money, then I am happy.

I don't like the way things are looking for family finances today. It's discouraging to see so many families in financial trouble. Maybe, I'll help change that! Maybe you can change something too!

Declaring an Authentic Niche Market

Find out why choosing your niche market will free you to be the biggest, most authentic, and most complete offer possible.

niche … 1. A recess in a wall, as for holding a statue. 2. A cranny, hollow, or crevice, as in a rock. 3. A situation or activity specially suited to a person’s abilities or character. 4. Ecol. a. The set of functional relationships of an organism or population to the environment it occupies. b. The area within a habitat occupied by an organism.
The American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition

For years I struggled with the concept of niche. I knew that choosing the right niche market was considered essential to business success, yet for me, as for many professionals, choosing a niche felt like the kiss of death.

When we dig in our heels against choosing a niche, we are probably responding to the first two definitions above. After all, who wants to do business in a hole in a wall or in a tiny, rocky place? If you believe that defining your niche market means choosing a hard, cramped, and confining space, no wonder you resist.

People who bring their heart and soul to their work will resist niche marketing that tells them they must restrict the ways in which they offer value to the world. The good news is that choosing your niche market will do exactly the opposite: it will free you to be the biggest, most authentic, and most complete offer possible.

Consider the third and fourth definitions of niche. When you look at niche in this light, you will see that your perfect niche market is that location or domain in which you are most readily accessible to the people who are most likely to benefit from (and thus value) the offer that you are and in which you are simultaneously most free to exercise your brilliance.

Your niche market is the place in which you have a natural competitive advantage because you occupy the right place in the right ecosystem.

A good niche market is one in which:

-- You are highly visible and easily accessible to the people who are most likely to benefit from your work, including prospective clients and customers, prospective collaborators and partners, and others with whom value-adding activities are most likely to be mutually beneficial.
-- You can employ the widest range of your talents, skills, and training (your offer.)

There's a paradox in naming your niche market. When you give people a category to put your products or services in, it is easier for them to get a handle on what you do and to remember it. It's also much easier for them to appreciate how you differ from other professionals in that category. In other words, by putting yourself in a category, you can also make yourself stand out because you distinguish yourself from others in that category.

When marketing legal services, generalities fail and specifics persuade. The same is true when you decide which legal services you wish to feature in your attorney marketing program.

When you practice in various areas of the law, your prospects and referral sources see you as a generalist. Often, they don't remember you for any particular area of practice. In their minds, your image is blurred.

On the other hand, when you practice in one narrow area of the law, your prospects and referral sources know exactly what you do. Your image is clear and precise. So even if you want to practice in a broad area, or offer a wide range of services, you'd do well to define your niche in narrow terms so prospects and referral sources see you in one specific niche.

The more narrow your niche, the easier it is to establish yourself as the authority in that niche and for people to perceive you as the expert. Also, the easier it is for clients, prospects and referral sources to remember exactly what you do.

The more narrow your niche -- and the more effective your marketing program -- the more your law practice will soar. It's no exaggeration to say that when you focus on one narrow niche, the sky's the limit.

So, how do you "specialize" when you're good at many things -- and when you may want to do many things?

Simple.

When I started in marketing, (a long time back), I was overwhelmed with all the skills I needed to learn. I thought no one person could possibly know how to write powerful ads, generate publicity, design seminars, create newsletters -- and do it all well.

Now, 30 years later, I see the bigger picture -- realize that basic principles apply across the board -- and view marketing much differently from the way I viewed it 3 decades ago. Today, I know how one person can understand how to create a powerful marketing message -- and then deliver that message using a number of different methods.

So today, I use a wide range of tools, including advertising, publicity, seminars, newsletters, tapes, web sites, and more. Yet these many tools all fall under the one umbrella of Education-Based Marketing.

Here's how you can create and profit from your own unique niche:

Step #1: Determine the areas of law in which you want to practice. Do you want to practice family law? Estate planning? Commercial transactions?

Step #2: Determine the types of clients you want to serve. Do you want to work with affluent consumers? Business owners? Doctors? Or all clients who need specific types of services?

You can approach your law practice either from the service point of view, meaning the services you want to provide. Or the client point of view, meaning the clients you want to serve. Or a combination of both, providing these types of services to those types of clients. Then write down your clients/services statement, so you can see clearly -- in writing -- exactly who you want to serve and what you want to do for them. Next:

Step #3: Create a new playing field. One problem lawyers have is that they practice in areas of law that are nearly identical from one lawyer to the next, and from one law firm to the next. If you want a personal injury lawyer -- an estate planning lawyer -- or a divorce lawyer -- you can probably find a dozen up and down your city block.

True, the generic label helps prospects identify the type of lawyer they need. But the generic label also reinforces the perception that all lawyers in a specific field are the same -- just because they all share the same label.

Don't accept the playing field defined by the marketplace, tradition or other lawyers. Create your own niche. Rise to a new level. After all, if you're investing money and time in marketing, you have every reason to re-define the playing field so it benefits you.

Step #4: Name your niche or area of specialization using fact-oriented, descriptive words. The old marketing adage is that people buy benefits and not features. Even so, when naming your niche, don t use a benefit title because it says nothing and arouses suspicion. When I named education-based marketing, I wanted a term that clearly describes what I do. I could have called it Power Marketing, Marketing That Works!, Brilliant Marketing -- or some other ridiculous combination of meaningless words. But, instead, I wanted a term that accurately described my marketing process in terms my prospects could relate to and understand. Hence, education-based marketing.

Name your niche so it describes what you do as factually and accurately as possible. At the same time, make sure your new name covers all the services you want to provide. If you use a narrow name, often prospects will think you provide only those services, not realizing you can and want to provide services outside that narrow area as well. So you want a niche name that creates the impression of a narrow focus, yet is broad enough to include everything you want under that umbrella.

Step #5: Market like crazy. From a competitive point of view, a new niche is worthless if your prospects don t know it, understand it and see it as a major competitive advantage. You could be the only lawyer in that niche -- and the only lawyer using the term -- but no one will care if your prospects don't see why they should hire you instead of your competitors. As a result, your new niche should become a key part of your marketing message. Then you need to educate prospects about why a lawyer in your niche -- who provides the services you offer -- is exactly the lawyer your prospects need.

Step #6: Reflect your new niche in all your marketing materials. If you create a powerful niche -- and believe in it -- then shout it from the mountaintops. All of your brochures, seminar materials, advertising, publicity and web sites should reinforce the existence and importance of your niche. The more traction your niche develops, the more validity prospects attach to it. The more prospects and competitors talk about it. The more real is becomes. Soon, prospects see it as a genuine niche, as opposed to a term you made up after a little wine. At that point, the niche you created moves from perception to reality, which, for marketing purposes, is the same.

SUMMARY: In a marketing sense, you should focus on one area of law. You're in the strongest competitive position when you create your own narrow niche. Make sure your niche is broad enough to include all the services you want to provide -- yet narrow enough so your prospects perceive you as an authority in that area.

IMPORTANT: Take your time and make these decisions carefully. Create different terms for your niche and ask clients and friends for their reaction. See which niche names do and don't appeal to them. See if they have an idea what the niche name means. The name you attach to your niche will likely determine its success or failure. So make this decision slowly, carefully, wisely.

I first wrote the term education-based marketing in 1984. Today, 22 years later, I still use it because (1) it describes exactly what I do, (2) it's the only marketing method I use, and (3) my prospects hire me to provide those services. That's the test of a good niche.

Now develop one for yourself so when marketing legal services, you gain a significant advantage over your competitors who also strive for attorney marketing success.

Everybody has something that they are good at or know a lot about, this is called your niche.

“Niche - a position particularly well suited to the person who occupies it”.

So what could be your niche?

Maybe you are a good organizer. Working parents are finding it increasingly difficult to spend time at home; let alone organize a party for their child. Become a children's party planner. Do some research in your area, the local children's indoor play areas, parks, leisure centers, anywhere that you can think of that would hold a party. Offer your services, perhaps leave flyers at schools, nurseries or even playgroups.

Develop a Niche Product. In 1980, Mandy Haberman's daughter was born with a condition that made feeding difficult. So, she set about designing a feeder for children with sucking problems (The Haberman Feeder)™. She then went on to invent the Anyway Up Cup™ for toddlers. Read more about her amazing journey at her website.

This is a classic example of sticking to what you know. This lady had a problem, which she understood fully. After researching the market for a product she found there wasn't one. So, after having to use some improvisation to feed her daughter, she went ahead and invented a product herself.

The same is true of Internet Marketing, find a niche and stick to it. Develop products and ideas based on your knowledge. It gives your work greater credibility because you can write with true authority on the subject.

Are you good at writing, reading or giving out advice. You could become a Writer, Editor or even a Consultant. Some people have a goal for the number of articles that they want to send out and may not have the time or ability to check them for typing mistakes, spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. This is where you come in, you can write, edit or give advice on articles, writing books or even weblogs. They could even send you their handwritten version and you could copy type it and send the finished version back to them. Check out www.elance.com to see what services people are asking for to see if you can match them.

Become a Reseller. Buy in bulk and sell on auction sites such as ebay, qxl, Amazon. A search on Google.com will find a whole list of them. Just make sure that you have the storage space if you're shipping physical products.

Once you have decided on your niche you will need to do some:-

Research. Do a search on Google.com to see “what the competition is”.

Plan your time effectively. Don't spend too long deciding on what you want to do because somebody else will pip you to the post.

Pick a Budget and stick to it. Decide on how much do you want to spend in advertising or development of the product. You don't want to be out of pocket before your business gets off the ground!

To your success

Why is it that everybody, and I do mean everybody, seems to think that this is the way it should be? Don't you think that we all would be driving that luxurious sports car, live in a mansion and be on holiday al the time?

So first things first, there is no way you can make money online without putting in the hard work, pay your dues like all of us and learn what it is all about. Now that we have cleared that, lets talk about how you can make money online!!

The first thing needed to make money online is your personal decision on what you want to sell on line, this seems logical but nevertheless it is extremely important, you need to sell something to create income. The best thing to sell according to recent studies is your personal wisdom. Nobody knows what you happen to know so this is a major advantage. They'll never be able to take that away from you.

Why would you start of where everybody else does, by joining some sort of guru program, where in the end, the so-called guru will be the only one actually making the money while you do all the work?

Step out off the mass thinking program and become an individual, there are several ways that you can take advantage of your knowledge and let other people sell that knowledge for you, this is what the affiliate programs are for. There are actually people out there who make it their main goal to sell other peoples products. Why not give them your product to sell.

How would you be able to create your own product you ask?

This unfortunately is where the hard work needs to be invested. The following steps need to be taken to make a irresistible product.

Find your niche product.
This can be done by using a free program called good keywords which can be found at http://www.goodkeywords.com. Once installed you should use the following three keywords. learn, training and buy. See which words grab your attention, where you've got some knowledge about and start writing. Try to write an Ebook of at least 100 pages to be able to ask the right price.

Set up your affiliate program.
You need an affiliate program to be able to process the orders sold by your affiliates, these programs also create the affiliate links for you. It includes a payment system and all the other things you will need.

Create an EBook, Tools and a Sales page.
You then need a great looking EBook and tools for your future affiliates to promote your products, these promotion tools should include: banners, text links, email text and if possible complete articles. Your EBook cover should look extremely professional since there is no opportunity for your customers to actually touch and feel. That's why it should at least look impressive. The same goes for your sales page.

Finally, find the best affiliates.
Once you've tested your affiliate program, tested your sales page, went through your EBook several times and actually made sales yourself, that's when you are ready to find your affiliates.

My clients and students are surprised and delighted to discover that a refined niche marketing strategy not only attracts significantly more business but also provides richer opportunities for self expression. To help you discern your own market niche, try using "where" and "who" questions like the following:

"Where" Questions

Where do you consistently find kindred spirits?
Where are you most credible?
Where is there the greatest need coupled with the greatest appreciation for your work?
Where do the people who need your work most often have breakdowns that would cause them to hire you?

"Who" Questions

Who is naturally drawn to you and to your work?
To whom are the things that seem obvious to you a revelation?
Who is traveling a path that you have successfully walked yourself?
Whose language do you speak?
Whose concerns can you reliably anticipate and address?
Whom is it easy for you to serve?

Knowing and working from your strengths are essential parts of developing your niche marketing strategy

There are probably several ways in which your strengths can add value in the marketplace. Therefore, developing a niche is a process of exploring several possibilities and gradually refining them.

You might think about developing a market niche as akin to planting a garden. You start by planting lots of seeds rather close together. As these germinate, you keep the strongest sprouts and remove the others. As your garden grows, you will continue to thin and prune until only the strongest and healthiest plants remain. Along the way you give away or compost the seedlings and trimmings; nothing is lost.

As you refine your niche marketing strategy, you'll grow in integrity and confidence. With time, you'll know with certainty which customers are right for you, and you'll attract more of them.

Are You Afraid of Using Niche Marketing Because it May Turn Away Business?

As you refine your market niche, you may experience some anxiety that focusing on your niche will deprive you of needed business. What do you do if someone outside of your niche wants to hire you?

Talk to them. See how well you fit. There is nothing about a focused niche that says you cannot work with a variety of clients. The point of a niche is not to confine you, but to create the healthiest ecosystem for your business. Focusing your market niche is like focusing a great searchlight that can be seen for miles around. Your searchlight may attract people from beyond your niche precisely because you have defined that niche.

While you always have the option of working with anyone who is attracted by your focused niche, do beware of trying to be all things to all people. Not only are you likely to fail at this, but you run an increased risk of coming across as inauthentic and insincere. The cost of not applying a niche marketing strategy is not being recognized for the offer that you are and not having a fulcrum from which to leverage that offer for increased effectiveness, service, and prosperity. The longer you persist in marketing to everyone and anyone who could conceivably hire you, the more certain it is that you will burn out, leaving yourself and your clients or customers dissatisfied. In order to make a compelling declaration of what you are up to, you must be willing to say "no" to those clients, projects, and possibilities that are not well within the scope of your passion and your expertise.

It is important to look to the market to see what your prospective customers and clients want. But look with a keen eye for how the needs and desires of the market match your strengths, talents, and passions. Say "no" to the opportunities that are a poor match, so that your vision and resources can be focused on the projects and relationships that are most likely to succeed.
